“질문과 대답”이라는 부제가 붙어있는 베토벤이 마지막으로 작곡한 작품번호 135번, 현악 4중주. 유행에 한참 뒤떨어진 푸가기법을 이용한 이 음악은 마치 음악으로 이야기하듯 특정한 멜로디는 곡 전체를 두고 계속 튀어 나와 대화를 하는 듯한 느낌을 준다. 이미 교향곡에 합창을 접목시키는 놀라운 시도를 한 그였지만, 죽음을 눈앞에 둔 시점에서조차도 음악을 진보시키기 위한 시도와 노력이 머릿속에 가득 차 있었나 보다.

이것은 현악 4중주 작품번호 135번의 4악장에 쓰인 음악 언어이다. 떠도는 소문에 의하면 돈을 빌려간 사람에게 베토벤이 일침을 가하기 위하여 만든 음악이라는 설도 있고, 못마땅한 하녀에게 밀린 월급을 주어야하는지 말아야 하는지 고민한 흔적이라는 설도 있다. 물론 연주도중에 연주자가 말로 표현하지는 않는다. 하지만 푸가형식의 반복적으로 주고받는 선율이 “꼭 그래야 하나?” “꼭 그래야 해요!”를 계속해서 강력하게 주장하고 있는듯한 느낌을 준다. 어느 것이 되었든 음악과 언어, 음악으로 전달하는 구체적인 메시지라는 시도는 당시로선 이해하기 힘든 실험이었다.
“꼭 그래야 하나?” “꼭 그래야 해요!” 어찌하여 기악곡에 가사가 붙어 있을까? 도대체 이게 무슨 뜻일까? 이 의문에 대해서 영화 “불멸의 연인”은 아주 간단한 해답을 준다. “불멸의 연인”에서 베토벤이 죽음을 얼마 남기지 않았을 때 한 여인이 그를 찾아온다. 베토벤에게 아들 칼 베토벤의 양육권을 빼앗긴 제수이자 연인 요한나였다.
베토벤은 말을 하기 힘든 상태였다. 그는 ‘조카 칼 베토벤의 양육권을 생모에게 돌려준다’라는 서류에 서명을 한다. 그리고 무언가 말하고자 하는데 목소리가 나오지 않았다. 메모할 곳을 찾다가 그는 들고 있던 악보에 무언가를 적기 시작한다. “꼭 그래야겠지?” 그러자 메모를 읽은 요한나가 답을 쓴다. “꼭 그래야 합니다” 물론 Bernard Rose의 임의적 해석이지만 그럴듯하다.
Beethoven: The comedy is over.
Johanna: Yes, I once loved him. He turned his back on me. He abandoned me. I never heard a word from him. I was a fool. I never meant anything to him.
Schindler: But the letter...?
Johanna: What letter?
Schindler: Well.... Frau Beethoven, I believe this is addressed to you.
Letter: My angel, my all... my other self. Just a few words today, and that in pencil. Yours. only tomorrow will I know for certain where I am to stay... a worthless waste of time and such. Why this deep sorrow? If we could be united, we would feel this pain no longer. Where I am, you are with me too. Soon we shall live together, and what a life it will be!
Beethoven: We must talk.
Johanna: Not here. No, Caspar will come!
Beethoven: But we must speak. I'm talking too loudly? Meet me in Karlsbad. This is the address. I can no longer skulk around like a guilty schoolboy.
Johanna: I have your child in me. Go.
Letter: The journey was dreadful. I did not arrive here until in the morning. At the last stop, they told me not to travel at night and tried to frighten me about a forest but that only tempted me. The coach had to break down on such a terrible road for no reason. Just a country road. And now I am held up completely. But I have found another, and we will surely see one another soon. Today, I hope. I have to see you. However much you love me, I love you more. Never hide yourself from me.
Johanna: Wait!
Letter: While still in my bed, my thoughts turn to you my Immortal Beloved. Some of them happy, some sad, waiting to see whether fate will hear us. I can live only completely with you or not at all. Yes, it must be. I must go to sleep now. Be calm, love. Today, yesterday, what longing with tears for you. You.... You're my life, my everything. Farewell, then. Go on loving me. Ever yours, ever mine, forever.
