R&B 그룹 파라마운츠(The Paramounts)가 해체되면서 그 멤버들을 주축으로 프로그레시브 록 밴드 프로콜 하럼을 결성하게 됩니다. Procol Harum은 17세기초 스웨덴의 한 정복자의 이름이라고 합니다.
팝역사상 가장 난해한 가사로 알려진 이 노래는(성적인 내용을 상징한다는 설도 있고 타이타닉호의 침몰을 의미한다는 해석도 있습니다), 1967년 대히트로 당시 무명이었던 Procol Harum을 세계적인 스타로 만들어 주었습니다. Bach의 'Suite No.3 In D Major'에서 장중한 오르간 연주를 차용 장중한 분위기를 연출한 전주부분은 초현실주의적인 가사와 음산한 오르간 연주가 매우 인상적이며 환상적인 분위기를 연출합니다. 당시 이앨범은 600만장 이상이 팔렸고, 300명이 넘는 가수에 의해 리메이크 되었다. 전세계에 이노래를 연구하는 현존사이트가 수십개 인걸보면 이노래가 주는 허무주의 내지 초현실적인면은 세계 많은사람들 가슴에 남아 있는것 같습니다
vestal virgin 로마 신화에서 가정의 여신인 Vesta의 성정에서 성화를 지키는 일을 했던 젊은 처녀를 vestal virgin이라고 합니다. 여기선 거기에 빗대어 다른 의미로 쓰인 것 같은데, 남자는 그녀가 vestal virgin이 되어 떠나도록 내버려 둘 수 없다는 걸로 봐서 그녀가 그렇게 떠나는 일이 그다지 바람직하지 못하다는 의미로.. 게다가 sixteen의 의미는 더욱 난해합니다. vestal virgin은 나이가 6세~10세의 소녀중에서 선발되며 모두 6명으로 구성되었습니다. 시대상 16세기는 더욱 아닙니다. 하지만 그 외 구체적인 정황도 이해할 수 없을뿐더러 곡 전체가 몽롱하고 환상적인 분위기입니다.
기존에 웹상에 떠있는 가사는 실제로 이 영상에서 Procol Harum이 부르는 가사와는 많이 달랐습니다. 받아적고 해석하느라 고생좀 했는데, 팝역사상 가장 난해한 가사라고 하더니 역시 중의적인 표현도 많고 (이런경우 대충 내맘대로 해석), 해석을 해 놓고도 무슨 이야기인지 이해가 되지 않는 부분도 많았습니다. 시간을 가지고 가사를 천천히 곱씹어봐야겠네요.

The discovery of a "House of the Vestals" in Pompeii made the Vestal Virgins a popular subject in the 18th century and the 19th century. The objects of the cult were essentially the hearth fire and pure water drawn into a clay vase.
